We have wiggly babies!

Sorry for the radio silence for the past month, but I've been feeling pretty awful and didn't have energy left at the end of the day to do much except sleep. The worst of the nausea and exhaustion seem to be behind me now, so hopefully we'll have a good few months before I get huge and exhausted again.

Yesterday morning, we had our 12 week appointment and NT scan. Everything looks great! The babies are much bigger and actually look like babies now, not sea monkeys!

Here's Baby A!

And here's Baby B!

The NT scan went great - it is a non-invasive screening test for markers of Downs Syndrome and other chromosomal defects done at the end of the first trimester. They measure the fold at the back of the baby's neck, check the nasal bone development, and draw blood from the mother to check hormone levels. Based on the results, they can give us a risk factor for Downs. We won't have the final results until next week after they process the blood test, but based on the ultrasound, the doctor doesn't see any increased risk of Downs or other chromosomal abnormalities in either baby.

Matt and I were amazed to see how much the babies have grown since we saw them last month. And they move now! They were wiggling all around and kicking their feet! We saw adorable little fingers and feet and faces and knees and bellies.

Baby A is a bit ahead of the game, measuring 3 days bigger than its "actual age" at 12 weeks 5 days and Baby B is right on track at 12w2d. Both have strong heartbeats (162 and 153 bpm) and we were able to hear them now, rather than just see the "flicker" on the screen.

Our next appointment is 10/15 for another ultrasound (we'll have a monthly u/s with the twins) and a second trimester blood screening test. Hopefully we'll find out the genders at that visit too!

We're glad the first trimester is behind us - only 6 more months to go!

  1. Hi Little Ones - It's Mimi & Poppy. We can't wait to meet you. As soon as you finish "cooking". I bet you and Matt are really elated to see them looking like babies now. We can't wait to find out boy/girl. Can't wait to see you and Matt in 3 weeks for Jim's wedding. I'm so excited I can't stand it! Keep doing whatever you're doing - it seems to working great! They're getting big! Love you. Mom & Dave (Mimi & Poppy to the little ones kicking around inside.)
