Snow Days

Every 3-4 years, we seem to have an especially cold and snowy winter in DC, and this is one of them.  I think I can count on one hand the number of days that have been above freezing this year.  We are totally over it, and counting down the days until Spring.  We all feel cooped up, especially the kids.  They haven't been able to play outside at school or at home becuase it's been too cold or snowy or icy pretty much every day. 

 

We've had a couple of storms big enough to give us proper snow days, though, and that's been fun.  But because last winter was so warm and dry, and they are growing so fast, I didn't want to waste money on snow boots and pants so we've had to improvise by taping plastic grocery bags to their feet and layering pants.  On our first snow day, we went for a walk up the street to play with their friend Lucas and his sled.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Yesterday, we woke up to 6"+ of snow (Matt says 4, but he always underestimates in my snow-loving opinion). 

 

 

It was wet, heavy snow and kept going off and on throughout the day so we stayed warm and cozy inside.  When I told Lucinda that her preschool was closed because of the snow, she said she could still pretend to go to school, so she arranged all of her friends in a circle and taught them songs and colors. 

 

 

Lucinda and I also spent a lot of time painting and coloring.  Malcolm spent his time running around downstairs playing planes and trains with daddy.

 

 

We also baked Valentine's cookies. 

 

  

 

While the cookies were baking, Malcolm and Lucinda brought their blankets to the kitchen for one of their favorite games -- magic carpet rides!  They used their magic wands (silicone basting brushes) to make their carpets fly so they could fly around rescuing all the animals and bringing them back to the cloud castle.  The blankets conveniently doubled as picnic blankets once the cookies were ready.

 

 

They also spent a fair amount of time chasing each other around in a game they made up.  The goal seemed to swing between hugging, tackling, and catching this colored square.  I don't really understand what they were doing, but they were having fun and it was quite cute.

 

  

 

We also spent time watching movies in front of the fire and snuggling.  All in all, a good snow day!
