We spent most of our time in Vermont hiking and exploring the area, reading and sitting by the fire. It was quiet and relaxing - just what we needed to recharge. We flew into Boston on Saturday morning and drove through New Hampshire to Hanover to see Dartmouth College. Then it was a quick skip over the border and we were in Vermont!
First stop was Simon Pearce Restaurant and Glass Factory in Quechee. We had a fantastic lunch in the old mill building overlooking the Quechee River, and then explored the glass factory. Downstairs we watched them blow glass into beautiful wine glasses, and carve tree trunks into wooden serving bowls. It was really neat - definitely a highlight of the trip!
Next stop was Quechee Gorge, which our guidebook called "the grand canyon of Vermont". It was beautiful, especially with all the fall colors. We hiked down to the river at the bottom and took some pictures.
We spent the rest of the day exploring the town of Woodstock, and getting settled into our room at the Kedron Valley Inn. That night we had a very special dinner in a converted barn at Cloudland Farm. All of the food came from the farm, or nearby farms, and everything was delicious! After dinner, we snagged one of the many games in the inn's common room and lit a fire in our room.
On Sunday, we spent the morning exploring Billings Farm. We really enjoyed the farm museum, learning all about the Billings family and farming methods from the 1800s, as well as the farmhouse, The farm is a working farm, so we also saw chickens, cows, sheep and a huge white horse that from a distance I was convinced was a unicorn.
When we were done at the farm, we hit up the Woodstock Farmers Market and bought sandwiches and picnic lunch supplies. We hiked to the top of Mount Tom and were rewarded with panoramic views of Woodstock and the surrounding area.
We spent the rest of Sunday just relaxing and reading on the wrap around porch of our inn, before heading inside for dinner. Monday morning we headed out right after breakfast, relaxed and refreshed, and ready to get home to the llamas.
Meanwhile, Malcolm and Lucinda had a blast with Grandma and Pap (who they dubbed "Buddy Popcorn"). They went to a birthday party, picked out and decorated pumpkins, hit up the toy store, and enjoyed lots of special time together. Malcolm & Lucinda were very happy to see us when we got home on Monday afternoon, and it was great to know they were in good hands while we were away.
