Five Months

Wow, time is flying -- Malcolm and Lucinda are 5 months old!


At five months, Malcolm Walter (aka "Chicken", "Puppy", "Bubba", "Buddy")

• weighs around 15 lbs. (there was no official pediatrician weigh in this month)
  
• eats about 35 oz. of breastmilk/formula each day, plus one meal of solid food.
  
  
• goes to bed really easily, though it's still difficult to calm him when he wakes and gets worked up overnight. He sleeps from about 7pm-7am, with three daily naps, but still wakes up at least once overnight to eat.
  
• hasn't met a food he doesn't like. He's tried and loves rice cereal, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, peas, green beans, avocados, bananas and pears. He knows what's coming and gets excited as soon as we put him in his high chair each evening.
  
  
• wears size 3-6 month clothes, but some of those are starting to get a bit snug.
  
• sits and stands with support, and is rolling from his back to his tummy. Over the past week, we've gone into their room at night frequently to find Malcolm on his tummy, after putting him to sleep on his back. Unfortunately, he has not yet mastered rolling from his tummy to his back, so he tends to get stuck. We're doing lots of tummy time to try to get him rolling both ways.
  
  
• is very talkative, especially when wrestling with the Winkle.
  
• is laughing a lot, and making funny goose noises.
  
  
• is extremely solid, and quite strong.
  
• is getting very good with his hands, and is grabbing, holding and reaching for toys. His favorite toys this month are the Winkle, plastic links, and his soft/satiny froggy blanket. Speaking of his hands, Malcolm is a thumbsucker.
  
  
• is ticklish. Matt gives him a good tickle before his bath each night, and Malcolm giggles up a storm.
  

Malcolm is a very sweet, cuddly, enthusiastic and gregarious boy. He gets very excited about new experiences and lights up with giant smiles whenever he sees someone or something he likes.

At five months, Lucinda Jean (aka "Jelly Bean", "Baby Girl", "Goose")

• weighs around 12.5 lbs.
  
• wears size 0-3 month clothes still, except for footed PJs, which are mostly 3-6.
  
• eats about 30 oz. of breastmilk/formula a day, plus one meal of solid food.
  
  
• has a sweet tooth. Lucinda loves sweet potatoes and bananas, but was not wild about green beans and peas. She's generally much more skeptical of new foods than her brother, but has got the mechanics down now and is generally eating well
  
• is harder to get down for the night, but sleeps better once she's down. She also sleeps from 7-7 with 3 naps, and typically wakes up once overnight and again around 5:30 am, which she's trying to convince us is a good time to start the day.
  
  
• sits and stands very well with support, and occasionally rolls over both ways, but not very often yet.
  
• finally has hair!
  
  
• is also exploring her voice, and says 'hi' and 'hey' quite frequently, presumably immitating sounds she's heard us make.
  
• is smiling and laughing a lot, and greets us with a big grin when we go get her from her crib.
  
• roams about her crib at night. Within a minute of putting her down, she's turned at least 90 degrees, and moved halfway down the mattress.
  
• is a music fan. She loves the Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes toy, and loves singing and dancing.
  
• is still itty bitty. Especially her waist - she is just a tiny little thing!
  
  
• is a ferocious kicker.
  
• is super curious (read: easily distracted). It's hard to get her to finish her bottle or her dinner because it seems like her head is on a swivel taking in everything around her.
  
• just discovered her feet. She thinks they are the best thing ever.
  
  

Lucinda is a sweet, shy and persnickety, yet silly girl. It takes her a little while to warm to new experiences and people, and she prefers to observe for a bit before diving in. Once she warms up, though, she is as sweet as can be, and can be downright goofy. She also makes the funniest faces!
